Most paid online dating sites introduce its services with images of hot and voluptuous women or 6-packed dark and handsome men on their homepage. The idea is to make you believe that these could be real members of their dating service and, you too, can find true love with a hot-looking person. WOW! That gets me all excited just to think that I could hook up with someone that hot. What am I waiting for? Here’s my credit card. How much? $24.95 per month? Or maybe $39.99/mo? - I don’t care. I am single and I want to hookup with a hottie and I want it now!
I exaggerate a little above, but that’s not too far from the truth is it? If you were in one of those situations, you know what I am talking about. Paid dating sites make use of sexually appealing images, seductive words and “free trial” hooks (not really free once you join) to bait users. But after you sign up, pay your monthly fee, you find out that you are not getting any replies from those hotties and the only members that reply are not as “sexy” compared to the photos you saw at first. Big surprise!
Have you have been burnt by these too good to be true “profile photos” on paid dating sites?
But these are not the scam I am referring to. Although you shouldn’t expect too much from paid online dating sites anyways.
What scam are you talking about then?
But the real scam, maybe “scam” is to harsh, but it did get your attention didn’t it? What I want to convey, might offend some, here it goes. It is our own fault as singles falling victim to these paid dating sites. And falling prey to sexy photos and profiles, believing they are real when most are probably fake profiles created to lure subscribers. And since our basic human need for attention, affection and connection causes a willingness to pay any price necessary to find love, we willingly submit our credit card in hope to find true romance.
Not all paid dating sites are deceiving, but keep in mind, these sites are in the business of making money. Your finding true love is a byproduct of their business model, and not vice versa. And yes, major personals sites have high overheads and need inflow of cash to pay for hosting fees, employees, editors, models, etc…but is paying for online dating sites really necessary?
Free dating sites
Yes, these sites exist. And are 100% totally free. From creating your profile to contacting other members, these new breed of online dating sites are popping up all over the place. These are a group of free dating sites that are driven by a unique group of site owners who feel that finding love online should be as free as in real life. You don’t pay a monthly fee to meet people at parties, get introduced to a friends’ friend, or just say hi. So why should you have to pay to meet people online? Ever heard of IRC or Yahoo! Messenger?
Free dating services are as good, if not better than many paid services. On many free dating sites you get the same member functions like unlimited messages, photos and video uploads, free chat and IM and many more. So why would someone pick to join a paid dating site instead of a free one?
I’m interested to hear your thoughts about this.
